Why eight causative suffixes in Wolof?

چکیده

Like other Atlantic languages, Wolof has a large inventory of verbal derivation suffixes, but is exceptionally well endowed for causative with no less than eight different suffixes. This article analyzes the values these suffixes and reveals firstly double gradient distinctions concerning degrees involvement causer causee. Among two show typologically rare specialization, one being specialized in sociative (assistive) causation, expression indirect causation obligatory omission Three rarely analyzed, combine direct value indications modalities realization process, namely, incomplete, completing corrective causation. Several are clearly complex cannot be described as multiple suffixation synchrony. Various reconstruction hypotheses nonetheless presented attesting to family. Finally, this derivational abundance compared general morphosyntactic strategies Wolof.
